Your Class Rep: Rediscovering the Joy of Game Manuals

Rediscovering the Joy of Game Manuals

Your Class Rep game Manual!

For me, the manual has always been an important part of the gaming experience. It’s not just instructions; it’s the first real glimpse into the world you’re about to play in. With Your Class Rep, I wanted to capture that feeling again: the excitement of a new game in hand, the car ride home, and the anticipation as you flip through the pages imagining all the possibilities. Feeling the paper between your fingers, exploring the story, and learning about the characters is something tangible that digital instructions can’t replicate.

Here, let me take you inside...

What’s Inside the Manual

The Your Class Rep manual is more than a set of rules — it’s a mini experience in itself, all rendered in charming 2-bit Game Boy–style black and white pixel art.

Story Section

The story section sets the tone for the classroom conflict you’re about to play out with cards. It introduces the world, hints at rivalries, and gives context for the quirky students, teachers, and staff that make each match feel alive.

Character Bios

Each card has a story, and the manual expands on that. Character bios give you little facts and personality details you might not notice just from the art. Who knew that quiet Felix is secretly obsessed with string theory, or that Vice Principal Grizz is a softie under his gruff exterior? These bios add depth and flavor to every hand you build.

Rules and Gameplay

The manual also includes clear rules for play:

  • How to build your hand by combining cards from multiple sets.

  • Card anatomy and types.

  • How abilities work and when they trigger.

Pixel Art and Design

The pages are sprinkled with 2-bit black and white pixel art and design elements, echoing the retro style of the cards themselves. Checkered patterns, little character doodles, and other touches make flipping through the manual a playful experience in its own right.

Why It Matters

A good manual is more than instructions; it’s part of the game’s charm. For Your Class Rep, it’s a way to bring back that moment of wonder we all remember — the first time you opened a new game, read the story, learned about the characters, and imagined the gameplay possibilities.

The black-and-white pixel art helps set the nostalgic tone, giving the manual a tangible, retro feel that perfectly complements the fast-paced card game. The manual helps players feel connected to the world before they even play, making the first round feel even more exciting and meaningful.

Bringing back this tangible, story-rich experience is something I’m really proud of, and I hope it sparks the same joy in players that it does for me.
