Card Game Packaging Concepts (What I'm doing Differently)
I’ve been working on the packaging for Your Class Rep and I’m finally at a point where the idea feels right. This post is a look at some of the sketch concepts and how the design has evolved so far.
| From sketch to finished product! |
The packaging is designed like an envelope-style card holder. You can open and close it easily, and it keeps the cards stored right inside. It has one central flap and four smaller flaps that fold in around the cards, all sealed with a small sticker. The goal is to make it functional, minimal, and something you’d actually want to keep instead of tossing aside.
Take a look...
Outside Art
Here are my current ideas for the outside of the packaging; the front and back, and the inner side panels when closed. I'll likely continue iterating on this, but I think it's close to what I want. I really hope the front of this box makes people want to pick it up even if it's black and white. What do y’all think? Would this be something you'd grab off a store shelf?
Inside Art and Scale
| Inside art. |
For the artwork, I started with large pixel art splash pieces and then scaled them down about 50 percent. That ended up being trickier than I expected. When you reduce pixel art that much, some lines and details shift, and you lose a bit of control over how the final image reads.
Even with that challenge, I really like how it turned out. The smaller scale gives it a tighter, more intentional look; it fits the tone of the game better, like something you’d find printed in a zine or on the cover of an old game manual.
Blind Packaging Idea
One idea I’ve been considering is making the packaging “blind” collectables, each with different characters on the inside you won't see until you open the packaging. It’s a fun idea, but it also goes against one of my main goals for this project; keeping the game free from “gacha” style mechanics.
So even though I like the concept, I’ll probably skip it. I might instead sell alternate character covers separately for anyone who wants extra versions. What do you guys think about that approach?
Next Steps
Overall, I’m happy with where the packaging design is heading. The layout feels clean, it protects the cards, and it fits the theme. The next step is to test it out in print and see how it holds up.
This part of the process has been fun; it’s the first time the game has started to feel like a complete product instead of just a stack of cards.
